Copyright & Media Rights
How Jewish World Records separates factual verification from the rights needed to publish photographs, video and other creative works, and how a rights holder can raise a concern.
Last updated September 2026
1. Verification and rights are separate matters
JWR verifies facts: what was achieved, by whom, and by what measurement or basis. Copyright governs something different: the photographs, video, artwork, recordings and other creative works used to illustrate those facts.
A valid record does not give JWR permission to reproduce a creative work. A record can be verified and published with no media at all, and a record page can be shown without an image or with an image withdrawn where the image itself cannot lawfully be published.
The absence of a photograph or video from a record page is therefore a rights outcome, not a statement about the accuracy of the record.
2. The basis on which JWR publishes media
Media appears on this website only where a lawful basis exists. In practice that means one of the following:
- media created or owned by JWR;
- media used with the direct permission of the rights holder;
- media in the public domain;
- media used under a Creative Commons or other open licence that permits the way JWR uses it;
- another lawful basis established before publication.
3. Attribution
Where attribution is legally or contractually required, JWR preserves it — usually as a credit line with the media, and where a licence requires it, a link back to the source and a note of any changes.
Attribution is a condition of use, not a statement of approval. Crediting a source does not mean that source endorses JWR, the record, or the record holder.
4. Media you submit
If you send JWR a photograph, video or other work as part of a submission, a challenge or correspondence:
- submitting media does not transfer ownership of it to JWR unless that transfer is expressly agreed in writing;
- you must hold the rights or the authorisation needed to provide the media for publication, including any permission required from people who appear in it or whose work it contains;
- where you supply media with narrower written permissions or restrictions — a single use, a required credit line, an expiry date — those terms govern and JWR applies them.
5. How JWR handles submitted media
JWR publishes submitted media only once its rights position is clear. Where that position cannot be established, the media is not published, or is withdrawn, even where the underlying record stands on its own evidence. Submission of media never by itself verifies, advances or publishes a record.
6. Reporting a copyright concern
If you believe media on this website has been published without a lawful basis, or without the credit or permission it requires, tell JWR through the correspondence form on this website or by email to the address below. A notice should include:
- the claimant's name, or the name of the rights holder you represent;
- contact details where JWR can reach you;
- identification of the copyrighted work;
- the relevant JWR page or URL where the work appears;
- the basis of your rights or authority to act;
- an explanation of the concern;
- supporting material, where available.
7. How JWR reviews a concern
On receiving a notice, JWR may:
- request additional information needed to assess it;
- temporarily disable the disputed media while it is reviewed;
- review the licence or permission relied on;
- contact the party who supplied the media;
- restore the media, or remove it permanently, once the review is complete.
8. What a rights decision does not decide
Removing disputed media does not necessarily invalidate the underlying factual record. Media rights and record verification are separate questions, and each is decided on its own evidence: a record may remain published while an image is withdrawn, and a withdrawn image says nothing about whether the achievement was verified.
9. DMCA and designated agent
JWR has not appointed or registered a DMCA designated agent, and no agent details are published on this website. Nothing here should be read as a statement that such a registration exists.
Copyright notices are handled through the contact channels described above, which is the route to use for any concern, including one framed under United States copyright procedure. If a designated agent is registered in future, the agent's name, mailing address and contact details will be published in this section.
Report a Copyright Concern
Rights holders and their representatives may raise a concern at any time. Use the correspondence form and select the subject closest to your concern, or write to jewishworldrecords@gmail.com. Include the details listed above so JWR can locate and assess the item without a round of questions.
