Biografía

Frank Spellman was an American Jewish weightlifter and Olympic champion. Born in Paoli, Pennsylvania, on 17 September 1922, he became one of the leading American lifters of the postwar period. At the 1948 London Olympic Games, Spellman competed in the men’s middleweight division and won the gold medal with a total of 390 kilograms. His performance also included Olympic-record lifts and established him at the top of his weight class on the sport’s largest international stage. Jewish sports histories identify Spellman as a Jewish Olympic champion, and the Jewish Olympic medal chronology places his 1948 victory before later Jewish weightlifting champions. His achievement came at the first Summer Olympics held after the Second World War. For JWR, the decisive fact is his official middleweight gold on 10 August 1948, which establishes the earliest verified Jewish Olympic championship in weightlifting.
