About

Dubrovnik Synagogue stands at 5 Žudioska Street, within the historic Jewish quarter of Dubrovnik’s walled Old Town in Croatia. It is associated with a Jewish presence in the city dating back to the medieval Republic of Ragusa and with the Sephardic community that developed there in the early modern period. Local tradition associates the synagogue with 1408, but historical and architectural sources distinguish that early date from the present prayer hall, which was subsequently relocated or adapted and furnished in Baroque style during the seventeenth century.

The synagogue occupies the upper floor of a stone building. Its sanctuary preserves a carved wooden Torah ark and a central reading platform, while an accompanying museum displays ritual objects, Torah scrolls and archival materials that reflect centuries of Jewish life in Dubrovnik. The building and its collection endured earthquakes, the Second World War and damage during the conflicts of the 1990s, followed by restoration.

The site remains a symbol of the city’s Jewish heritage and is used for Jewish worship, although its history includes interruptions in services; it should not be described as continuously active without qualification.

Dubrovnik Synagogue, in the historic Jewish quarter on Žudioska Street in Dubrovnik, is recognized as Croatia's oldest active synagogue by the chronology of the country's surviving Jewish places of worship. The traditional date of 1408 is widely associated with the synagogue's early history. The Dubrovnik Tourist Board cites 1408 and describes the site as the world's oldest active Sephardic synagogue. Jewish Heritage Europe also reports a synagogue in Dubrovnik by 1408, while identifying the existing premises as a historic stone house whose prayer hall was later altered.
