About

Congregation Shaare Tefilah acquired its Jackson Avenue site before the Civil War, but wartime disruption delayed completion of the synagogue until 1867. The building served the congregation for decades before Shaare Tefilah moved elsewhere in 1920. After a succession of later uses and periods of decline, the historic structure was restored and converted in the 2010s into a 12-unit apartment building. It is therefore a former synagogue whose present use is residential, while the original nineteenth-century building remains preserved. Historic 1867 synagogue building at 709 Jackson Avenue in New Orleans, now adaptively reused as apartments. In Jewish World Records, Former Shaare Tefilah Synagogue is connected to the record “Oldest Building in Louisiana Originally Built as a Synagogue,” based on the stored achievement of Built in 1867.
