Biography

Jenő Fuchs was a Hungarian Jewish sabre fencer and one of the leading Olympic swordsmen of the early twentieth century. Born in Budapest on 29 October 1882, he represented Hungary at the 1908 London Olympics and won gold medals in both the individual and team sabre events. Four years later, at Stockholm 1912, he repeated the double, again taking gold in individual and team sabre. His four Olympic titles made him one of the most successful fencers of his era. Fuchs’s Jewish identity is documented in Jewish sports histories, which also preserve his place among the outstanding Jewish Olympians of the period. For JWR, his individual sabre victory on 24 July 1908 is the decisive achievement: it is the earliest verified Olympic fencing gold by a Jewish athlete and therefore establishes the record documented on this page.
