About

The Plum Street Temple, also known as the Isaac M. Wise Temple, is a historic synagogue in Cincinnati, Ohio, that was erected and dedicated in 1866 for the city’s Reform Jewish community. The building is a nationally recognized example of Moorish Revival architecture and is designated as a National Historic Landmark, confirming its historical and architectural significance. The temple remains an active center for Jewish life and is still regularly used for Sabbath services, lifecycle events, and other religious functions. This continuing use is central to its record as the oldest surviving purpose-built synagogue building in Ohio that is still used for Jewish worship. While an older purpose-built synagogue from 1860 survives elsewhere in Ohio, it no longer functions as a house of worship, leaving the 1866 Plum Street Temple as the record holder.
