Biography

Richárd Weisz was a Hungarian Jewish athlete best known for winning the Greco-Roman heavyweight wrestling title at the 1908 London Olympic Games. Born in Budapest on 30 April 1879, Weisz competed in an era when organized wrestling and strength sports were developing rapidly in Central Europe. At London 1908 he entered the heavyweight Greco-Roman tournament and emerged as Olympic champion on 24 July. His victory made him an important figure in Hungarian Olympic history and, according to Jewish sports chronologies, the earliest verified Jewish Olympic champion in wrestling. Weisz’s sporting career also reflected the close relationship between wrestling, weight training and athletic clubs in the period. For JWR, however, the record is narrowly defined by his official Olympic wrestling gold, supported by the event results and separate evidence of his Jewish identity.
