About

Temple Emanuel is Colorado's oldest active Jewish congregation. Its roots lie in a burial and prayer society formed in Denver in 1866, and twenty-two members formally incorporated the congregation in 1874. The first synagogue was dedicated in 1875 at Nineteenth and Curtis Streets. The congregation erected a larger building at Twenty-Fourth and Curtis in 1882; after a major fire in 1897 it moved to a third home at Sixteenth Avenue and Pearl Street, dedicated in 1899. As membership continued to grow, Temple Emanuel later moved again, preserving the continuity of the congregation while its physical homes changed. The historic 1882 building still survives today but no longer serves as Temple Emanuel's synagogue.
