Valeur du record

10 December 1910

Paul Heyse is recognized by JWR as the first Jewish recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Prize’s official records identify the German writer as the sole Literature laureate for 1910. Heyse was honored for a long and influential literary career that encompassed poetry, drama, novels and, especially, the novella form with which he became closely associated. JWR’s classification is based on documented Jewish family background through his mother and on a chronological review of Jewish and part-Jewish Nobel literature laureates. That chronology begins with Heyse and contains no earlier qualifying Literature laureate. The prize was presented on 10 December 1910, which JWR uses as the record value rather than the award year alone. The record therefore combines the official Nobel achievement evidence with an independent Jewish-laureate chronology and documented eligibility evidence.
