Official record definition

The greatest verified number of official Olympic gold medals won by a female athlete satisfying the JWR Jewish Eligibility Standard at a single edition of the Summer Olympic Games.

Measurement methodology

total official Olympic gold medals won by one eligible female athlete at a single Summer Olympic Games, verified against Olympic and Jewish-sports sources

Measurement point: Melbourne 1956 Summer Olympic Games

Record story

Ágnes Keleti of Hungary established the record for the most gold medals won by a Jewish woman at a single Summer Olympics during the 1956 Games in Melbourne, Australia. Her achievement is recorded as "4 gold medals at Melbourne 1956". These four victories came in the artistic gymnastics events for balance beam, uneven bars, floor exercise, and the team portable apparatus. This performance remains the highest single-Games gold medal tally for a Jewish female athlete in the Summer Olympics.

At the Melbourne Games, Keleti also secured two silver medals in the individual all-around and the women’s team competition, bringing her total for that Olympics to six medals. Her four golds surpassed the two won by fellow Jewish Olympian Maria Gorokhovskaya at the Helsinki Games in 1952. Overall, Keleti's Olympic career yielded ten medals, including five gold. The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame calls her the most successful Jewish female athlete in Olympic history.

International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame documents that Ágnes Keleti won four gold and two silver medals at the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games, including gold on balance beam, uneven bars, floor/free standing and team portable apparatus.

Superiority evidence

JWR's Jewish-women single-Games gold-medal counter-search found no eligible Jewish woman above four golds. Maria Gorokhovskaya won two golds among seven medals at Helsinki 1952, while other leading Jewish women Olympians reviewed remained below Keleti's four-gold single-Games total.

Most Olympic Gold Medals Won by a Jewish Woman

Record holder

Ágnes Keleti&Sue Bird

Record value

5 Olympic gold medals each

Ágnes Keleti and Sue Bird are the joint holders of the JWR record for the most Olympic gold medals won by a Jewish woman, with five gold medals each. Keleti won five Olympic gymnastics golds across the 1952 Helsinki and 1956 Melbourne Games, as part of a ten-medal Olympic career. Bird won five consecutive Olympic basketball gold medals with the United States from Athens 2004 through Tokyo 2020, reaching her fifth on 8 August 2021. JWR’s comparison reviewed documented Jewish women Olympic champions across sports and found no eligible athlete with more than five official Olympic gold medals. Because the two athletes reached the same verified maximum through different sports and eras, the record is held jointly rather than broken by secondary criteria. The record value is therefore five Olympic gold medals each, with Bird’s fifth gold establishing the current tie.
