Official record definition

The greatest verified number of children born to one publicly documented Jewish woman. The record requires sources that identify the same mother and explicitly support the child count; paternal-only family totals, anonymous anecdotes and unverified traditions are excluded.

Measurement methodology

Cross-check explicit historical and Jewish-community sources that identify one named mother and state the number of children born to her; then test higher reported Jewish-family totals for same-mother attribution and source reliability.

Measurement point: total documented children attributed to the same mother

Record story

Annie Ezekiel Jonas belonged to Exeter's historic Jewish community in southwest England and married Benjamin Jonas, a watchmaker associated with Exeter and Teignmouth. Historical Jewish scholarship repeatedly records Annie and her husband Benjamin as the parents of a total of 22 children. Their family later became prominent in early American Jewish life: sons including Joseph and Abraham Jonas helped establish Jewish communities in the United States. JWR recognizes Annie only under a strict documented-mother standard. Reports of larger Jewish families were reviewed, but none located so far proves that a single identified Jewish woman gave birth to more than 22 children with comparable documentation.

Achievement evidence

Rabbi Bernard Susser's history of the Jews of South-West England states that Joseph Jonas was one of the 22 children of Benjamin Jonas and Annie Ezekiel. An American Jewish Archives article independently refers to the twenty-two children of Benjamin Jonas and Annie Ezekiel of Exeter, England. Isaac Markens' 1909 Abraham Lincoln and the Jews likewise describes their son Abraham Jonas as one of twenty-two children of Annie Ezekiel and Benjamin Jonas.

Superiority evidence

A counter-candidate search examined reports above 22. The often-cited family of Rabbi Akiva ha-Kohen is described as 25 children of the father, but the material located does not establish that all 25 were born to one identified woman. Other reports of 24 or more children lacked sufficient identifiable-mother and independent-source documentation. On the evidence located through 2 October 2026, 22 is the highest verified same-mother Jewish case found.
