Official record definition

The earliest-established Jewish religious congregation within the U.S. state of New Mexico that continues to operate as the same active institutional congregation. Cemeteries, B'nai B'rith or service lodges, informal worship groups, building age, uninterrupted occupation of one building, denomination, membership, floor area and sanctuary capacity are outside the metric.

Measurement methodology

Institutional founding chronology and current-continuity review across New Mexico Jewish congregations using congregational, university-archive, state Jewish-historical and independent heritage sources.

Measurement point: earliest formal founding date among currently active New Mexico Jewish congregations

Record story

Congregation Albert in Albuquerque holds the record for the Oldest Jewish Congregation Still Active in New Mexico. The congregation was founded on 26 September 1897 and received its formal territorial incorporation on 7 April 1902. It has remained in operation as an active Reform Jewish congregation, with documented current Shabbat services, membership and programming. The achievement is notable for the continuity of the institution itself, which has moved through three different synagogue buildings since its founding while remaining active.

The record is based on institutional founding chronology among currently active congregations. While the New Mexico Jewish Historical Society identified Congregation Montefiore as the state's first Jewish congregation in 1884, it dissolved in 1955 and does not meet the continuous operation requirement. Sources also distinguish Congregation Albert's 1897 religious founding from an earlier secular B'nai B'rith lodge established in 1883. Clio independently confirms Congregation Albert as the state's oldest continuously operating Jewish congregation.

Superiority evidence

The University of Arizona Southwest Jewish Archives distinguishes the secular 1883 B'nai B'rith lodge from the religious congregation formed in 1897. The New Mexico Jewish Historical Society identifies Congregation Montefiore as the state's first Jewish congregation in 1884 but confirms that it dissolved in 1955. Clio independently identifies Congregation Albert as New Mexico's oldest continuously operating Jewish congregation; later Santa Fe, Roswell, Las Cruces and other congregations do not predate it under the active institutional-continuity metric.

Oldest Active Jewish Congregation in Oklahoma

Record value

May 1903

Temple B’nai Israel is recognized by JWR as the oldest active Jewish congregation in Oklahoma. The record is held by the continuing congregation, not by any one synagogue building. Founded in Oklahoma City in May 1903, the congregation has occupied several sites while maintaining an ongoing institutional identity. Its official history traces the community from its formation through its first permanent synagogue and later campuses. JWR’s statewide comparison also considered earlier or near-contemporary Jewish communities. Temple Emeth in Ardmore was organized earlier, in 1890, but later dissolved; Emanuel Synagogue in Oklahoma City was formally chartered in 1904, and Temple Israel in Tulsa dates to 1914. B’nai Emunah developed from an early minyan but was formally organized later. The record therefore measures continuous congregational existence and present activity, not the age of a surviving building.
